Motor Control & Performance: The PowerFlex 525 offers multiple motor control modes to suit different application needs. It supports traditional volts-per-hertz (V/Hz) control for simple applications, as well as more advanced sensorless vector control (SVC) for improved torque response and speed regulation. For higher performance, it can do closed-loop velocity vector control when equipped with an optional encoder feedback module (this allows precise speed or position control with an encoder input). Notably, the drive can also run interior permanent magnet (IPM) or surface permanent magnet (SPM) motors in addition to standard induction motors, enabling use of high-efficiency motor technologies in pursuit of energy savings (Rockwell PowerFlex 525 features). The control platform includes features like an internal PID controller (with two PID loops available in the 525) for process control and a patented PointStop™ function that can stop a motor at a consistent position without encoder feedback – useful for simple positioning tasks. All PowerFlex 525 drives come with an integrated dynamic brake chopper (brake IGBT) as standard, which means adding an inexpensive external resistor is all that’s needed to implement dynamic braking for quick stops or for handling regenerative loads. The drive’s output PWM frequency is programmable up to 16 kHz, allowing for very quiet motor operation (at the expense of some extra heat) – useful in noise-sensitive environments (PowerFlex 520-series Technical Data). For applications with high overload requirements, the 525 offers dual overload ratings: in Normal Duty mode it can deliver 110% of rated current for 60 seconds (with 150% for 3 seconds), whereas in Heavy Duty mode it provides 150% overload for 60 seconds (with up to 180–200% peak for 3 seconds) to handle more demanding torque loads. This dual-rating capability (available on models ≥15 HP) gives engineers flexibility to size the drive appropriately for either light-duty or heavy-duty workloads (per the specifications in the official data sheet)
