Power Quality and Protection: The drive includes several features to ensure reliable operation on different power systems. For installations on an ungrounded or high impedance grounded system, the 525 has a removable MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) jumper – by removing this jumper, the input surge protection MOVs are disconnected from ground, preventing inadvertent tripping or damage when line-to-ground voltages are elevated (a common recommendation for VFDs on ungrounded systems). To minimize inrush current, an internal pre-charge circuit is used (charging the DC bus through a resistor at power-up), reducing stress on upstream components. As mentioned, all models come with a built-in DC brake transistor, and the drive can be programmed for various stopping modes (including ramp, coast, DC brake, and S-curves). Electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering is also built-in on most ratings: specifically, all 200 V-class and 400 V-class PowerFlex 525 units have internal EMI filters that satisfy EN 61800-3 Category C2 (for industrial environments) and C3 (for larger industrial networks) EMC requirements, which covers the majority of industrial installations without needing external filters. If compliance with the stricter Category C1 (residential/light commercial) EMC standard is needed, or for the few models where an internal filter isn’t included (e.g. some 600 V units), Rockwell offers external line filters to achieve C1 or additional noise attenuation as required (PowerFlex 520-Series Technical Data, Table on EMC Compliance). It is generally recommended to use shielded motor cables and follow proper grounding practices with VFDs; the 525’s documentation provides guidelines on cable length vs. switching frequency to mitigate reflected wave transients that could stress motor insulation. In practice, the built-in protections (overvoltage, undervoltage, motor overload, overtemperature, etc.) and robust design (the unit boasts a high input power factor of ~0.98 and efficiency around 97.5%) make the PowerFlex 525 a reliable workhorse in the 0.5–30 HP drive class
