To wire the controller for high-speed counter applications use input terminals I/0, I/1, I/2, and I/3. Refer to chapter 12 for information on using the high-speed counter. Shielded cable is required for high-speed input signals 0-3 when the filter setting is set to either 0.10 ms or 0.075 ms. We recommend Belden #9503 or equivalent for lengths up to 305 m (1000 ft). Shields should be grounded only at the signal source end of the cable. Ground the shield to the case of the signal source, so energy coupled to the shield will not be delivered to signal source’s electronics.You can also use modems to connect a personal computer to one MicroLogix 1000 controller (using DF1 full-duplex protocol) or to multiple controllers (using DF1 halfduplex protocol), as shown in the illustration that follows. Do not attempt to use DH– 485 protocol through modems under any circumstance. (For information on types of modems you can use with the micro controllers, see page D-9.)

The suggested DH–485 communication cable is either Belden #3106A or #9842. The cable is jacketed and shielded with one or two twisted wire pairs and a drain wire. One pair provides a balanced signal line, and one additional wire is used for a common reference line between all nodes on the network. The shield reduces the effect of electrostatic noise from the industrial environment on network communication. The communication cable consists of a number of cable segments daisy-chained together. The total length of the cable segments cannot exceed 1219 m (4000 ft). When cutting cable segments, make them long enough to route them from one AIC+ to the next with sufficient slack to prevent strain on the connector. Allow enough extra cable to prevent chafing and kinking in the cable. Use these instructions for wiring the Belden #3106A or #9842 cable.
